Thyroid diseases

There are two types of problems with your thyroid: it can produce too much hormones (hyperthyroidism) or not enough (hypothyroidism). Both of the situations can cause problems.
The thyroid gland is a small, butterfly - shaped gland in the base of your neck. It's part of the network of glands called endocrine system. This system is responsible of a lot of our body's activities. And in this case the thyroid gland manufactures hormones that regulates your body's metabolism.

When your thyroid is overproducing or underproducing it can cause symtoms like irritability, weigh loss, weigh gain, fatigue and more. Four common issues associated with the thyroid include Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, Graves’ disease, goiter (enlarged thyroid), and thyroid nodules.

HYPERTHYROIDISM
The gland is overacting and there is too much thyroid hormone. Many of your body's functions can speed up. It is more common in women.
The treatment can be: antithyroid medication, radioiodine therapy, beta-blockers and surgery.

HYPOTHYROIDISM
The gland is underacting and there is not enough thyroid hormone. Many of your body's functions can slow down. Cases of hypothyroidism can be mild.
Doctors often diagnose hypothyroidism with blood tests and imaging tests.
The main treatment for hypothyroidism is to take thyroid hormone pills. It’s important to get the dosage right because taking too much thyroid hormone can cause symptoms of hyperthyroidism.

In children it is common to have; hyperthyroidism, hypothiroidism, thyroid nodules and thyroid cancer.

To have a healthy thyroid you can:
- Limit ultra-processed food.
- Get enough iron in your diet.
