Infection
Infectious diseases are diseases caused by microorganism —such as bacteria, fungi, viruses or parasites. The microorganism enters a person's body and causes harm. Many organisms live in our body, and most of them are harmless or even helpful.
The microorganism uses the human body to sustain itself, reproduce and colonize. These infectious microscopic organisms multiply quickly. They can spread by different ways, including: skin contact, transfer of bodily fluids, contact with feces, ingesting contaminated food/water, etcetera.
Signs and symptoms vary depending on the organism that caused the infection, but often include fever and fatigue. Mild infections may respond to rest and home remedies, while some life-threatening infections may need hospitalization.
Many infectious diseases can be prevented by vaccines. Frequent and thorough hand-washing also helps protect you from most infectious diseases.
Bacteria, viruses, parasites and fungi vary in several ways: size, shape, function, genetic content, and how they act on the body.
Treatment will vary on the cause of the infection.
Now you'll see the most common and deadly types of infections and a couple of examples of each one:
- Viral infection -> common cold, polio.
- Bacterial infection -> cholera, otitis media.
- Fungal infection -> candidiasis, athlete's foot.
- Prion disease -> fatal familial insomnia.
