Tourette
Tourette syndrome is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects children, adolescents and adults. It affects the brain and nerves, causing people to do repeatedly movements and sounds (motor and vocal tics) that they cannot control. Tics can range from mild to moderate and severe, and are disabling in some cases.
It's important to know that people with Tourette don't always blurt out obscenities or curse words, it is a misbelief sometimes seen on TV. Only in 10-15% of the cases the words may be inappropriate.
Also, just having a tic doesn't mean you have Tourette: to have Tourette means that a person has at least two different motor tics and one vocal tic, and has had tics for over a year. Some other rules for the diagnosis are: tics started to appear before the age of 18, and they're not caused by the use of substance or other medical condition.
Tics typically appear at the age of 5 to 7 years, they tend to increase in severity and frequency between the ages of 8 and 12 years. Most people with TS see improvements during the late adolescence. Tics regularly change in type, frequency, and severity.
Causes of Tourette are unknown, but numerous studies confirm that genetics are involved.
Some famous people have TS: Billie Eilish, Kristen Stewart, Zac Efron... That confirms that people with Tourette often lead rich and fulfilling lives.
