An anaesthetist is a specialist doctor, who provides anaesthesia to a patient in a surgery or other procedures.

During a surgery, the anaesthetist administers the anaesthetic tailored to each patient and remains controlling it by monitoring and treating as necessary the effects of anaesthetic and the surgery.The scope of practice for an anaesthetist includes general anaesthetic, sedation and regional anaesthetic, perioperative assessment and management, airway management, postoperative care and resuscitation.
